Nice picture.

Now that I said something nice ... a pet peeve of mine is when rich people call an area something its not. “Village ... population ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand.” Theres a “ village” around Detroit, its  nothing like the village I grew up near.

What do you do in your downtime? Did you end up picking up an instrument?

I was thinking about that this morning actually. Historically, we’ve been a village and historically, it’s been a poor area.

Now however, it is very wealthy and has more people (3000+ people).

However, I think the following is relevant :

1) Village can be something cultural. The culture/feeling of Fort Langley is unique. We have no chains, all shops are boutique/independant/hyper local. The village is walkable, safe and clean.

2) I think terms like hamlet, village, town and city are proportional . A city in the far north is a town to most people in denser areas. A village in an urban area like Metro Vancouver would be a town to those in more rural areas.

You’re probably right, the one in the ‘burbs here is an outdoor mall and gets me riled up when people refer to it as an area. B ut I can remove my cynic hat, look at your pretty picture and be happy.

And s ometimes, its part of the legal name of the municipality. In my state, “ village” is completely  interchangeable with “town” and “city”, just depends on what word they liked best when they first organized.

I don’t think that is the way it works here. Fort Langley is really just a neighborhood in a larger municipality. I don’t think we’ve ever had our own government since we joined Canada.

Yeah, in your case, it was probably more of a disorganized frontier settlement generically called a village, that over time was incorporated into a larger municipality, but kept its own cultural identity.
